What is a fusion hair extension?
Fusion hair extensions are an excellent semi-permanent hair solution for those who want to wake up every day with gorgeous hair. It is one of the simpler hair installation methods and provides complete freedom to style your hair however you’d like.
Fusion hair extensions are one of the most popular methods of professional hair extension attachment. While one of the oldest and most traditional method of attaching hair extensions, it is making a big splash these days.
How does it work?
Stylists and clients are loving Fusion again because it’s trusted, natural, and long-lasting. You’ll also hear people call this the “hot fusion” or “glue-in” method (but not all methods include using glue).
Fusion extensions come in packs of 20 strands each. Each of these strands has a small, flat, square-shaped tip that holds all the individual hairs together. A strand is made of 1 gram of hair. A full head of Fusions is about 5 to 9 packs of hair. This means you could have 100 - 180 hair extension strands or more for a full head installation.
The hair extension tip is a square-shaped keratin protein bond. This tip is solid until melted with the Hair Extension Tool. The stylist takes a small section of hair that is equal to the hair extension strand and places the bond over the section.
The small plates at the end of the Melting Connector melt and soften the bonds. The stylist uses her fingers to mold and shape the melted keratin around the hair. When it cools, the keratin hardens again, creating a sealed, durable bond.
These small bonds are attached strand by strand, row by row starting at the base of the head and working up the sides and back of the head. Once finished, the bonds lie completely flat against the head and are covered by the upper layers of hair. After all the wefts have been installed, the stylist then blends and styles the hair so the extensions look completely natural.
How is it maintained?
Fusion hair can last for about three to six months. As you wear Fusion extensions, your hair will grow as it normally does, and that growth causes the bond and hair extension to move further and further away from the scalp. That’s why it’s important to go in for touch ups every few weeks so your stylist can adjust the bonds by removing them and re-applying them closer to the scalp.
Removing Fusion extensions is easy with a Keratin Bond Remover. This alcohol-based solution helps break down the adhesive so the bonds loosen. After the solution has been applied for a few seconds, the stylist uses the Hair Extension Tool to break the keratin bond. Once it’s loose, the hair extension slides off!
What kinds are best?
Hot Vs. Cold
Hot. Fusion hair has two different installation methods. The hot fusion method uses keratin glue to bond the extensions to the hair. A stylist will install the u-tip by melting keratin base with a fusion hair iron (on a low heat setting) and wrap it around a small section of hair.
I-tips can also be used for a hot install, however, additional keratin (such as keratin fusion glue pebbles) will be needed to bond the i-tips to the hair.
Cold. Cold fusion is a slightly simpler method. With cold fusion, a stylist will install the i-tips using micro ring beads (also known as micro links). Your stylist will pull a few strands of hair through the micro ring, and feed the top of the i-tip through as well. Then the beads are simply clamped down with some hair extension pliers for a secure hold.
I-tips are great for those who have thin hair. It provides you with fuller hair that you can style however you’d like! The small, 3.5mm shoelace-type tip allows for a completely natural blend that is undetectable. I-tips are great because they can be installed using a hot or cold method. The choice is yours! One installation typically lasts for about 4-8 weeks, and can be reinstalled 3-4 times before the extensions need to be replaced.
U-tips are meant for those with healthy hair. The keratin bond provides a stronger hold, as the the flat tip is heated to mold around the hair. These extensions do not experience slippage, as the extension is bonded to the hair and will remain so until the bond is cracked or removed with a solvent. This installation will also last anywhere between 4-8 weeks and can be reinstalled. When reinstalling the extensions, additional keratin glue will be needed to maintain a strong bond.
